I can’t believe this summer vacation is almost over! I guess it always does go by fast. I’ve been wanting to do some fun crafts with my kiddos before they head back to school, so I thought I would show my daughter how easy it is to melt and make homemade crayons.
I have fond memories of making my own crayons when I was a child. My friends and I would spend hours in our blanket forts picking the paper off of our old broken crayons and then melting them into huge blobs. I knew just where to get the crayons from. You see, a few weeks ago a certain little brother left Denae’s art set outback on a 100 degree day and all the crayons were melted everywhere. I was inside when she discovered what had happened and I thought she had broken her neck on the tramp her screams were so loud! My heart broke for her.
We decided to salvage the art set and make new crayons. Denae started by lined a couple of mini muffin tins with cupcake liners to melt her crayons in. We discovered that two liners are better than one. The extra liner prevents the wax from leaking out onto the tin.
We then began to peel the paper off of the crayons. We figured out that putting them on a paper plate and microwaving them for one minute helped the paper come off a lot easier.
Once we had all of the crayons peeled, Denae placed them in the cupcake liners.
We had enough crayons to fill 23 cupcake liners.
We then set them in the
weed patch backyard to melt in the sun. Our guard dog made sure nobody tried to steal them when we weren’t looking.
The crayons only took about ten minutes to melt and the color combinations turned out beautiful.
I carried the tins inside for Denae because they were super hot! We then waited patiently for them to cool and harden. Once they were hard to the touch we popped them out of the tins and had cute little crayon cupcakes!
Denae then took off all of the liners and placed them in a mason jar for storage.
I added a cute piece of ribbon and a few crocheted flowers to the jar so it would look cute sitting on Denae desk.
They are the cutest little crayons ever!
Not only does Denae have new crayons, but we got to spend time together and do a fun project!
Maybe someday she’ll be able to make homemade crayons with her own children, but before she grows up too fast, we’ll be coloring together and crafting. (And maybe hiding crayons form a certain little brother.)
